Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.

Early in 2008 I hurt my right shoulder at work and wasn’t able to draw as much weight with my bow as I did the previous deer season. So I turned down the poundage from 60# to 50#. That meant readjusting my sights. However, I kept them were they were because the way it worked out, my 35 yard pin became my 25 yd pin, and 45 yd now worked at 35 yds.

All I needed to do was remember this when the opportunity came. Well it came the 2nd day of turkey season. I was hunting the edge of a large woodlot next to some condos in suburban Grand Rapids when a couple toms came from my right. Between drawing my bow, making sure the camera was rolling, and trying not to let the toms see me draw, I totally forgot about my pin reconfiguration. I put the 15 yd pin right on him and let it fly. Nothin but dirty! Two toms go running by!

Then I remembered. I should have put my 25 yard pin on him because of the decreased draw weight. Luckily there was another tom still coming. This time I wasn’t going to forget.
